Manager Geun Choi

Gunsan Plant Chemical Section 1

  1. 1. Please introduce the work of chemical process engineers and describe your responsibilities in detail.

Chemical process engineers contribute to the growth of OCI in the front line of profit creation by managing and improving processes to produce products in an optimized state according to designated production.

They establish production plans and plans for the supply and demand of raw/supplementary materials, and produce products based on the plans. They continuously observe the actual production status according to the production plan by managing the daily/monthly/quarterly production amount and stock amount, recheck future operational methods, and analyze the factors that affect production. Based on the above, they plan the production work in the direction of improving productivity.

Also, they make efforts to efficiently operate processes by managing production facilities and minimizing the occurrence of problems for the smooth production of products. They save energy and manufacturing costs by improving processes to increase productivity with the optimization of existing processes and change existing production lines and extend plants to reflect improved process designs.

I am a section leader on the RE chemical production team in the Gunsan plant. I manage the overall work of the production team. Along with field technology workers, I make efforts for the processes I take responsibility for to run safely and efficiently.

  2. 2. What do you think are the most necessary job skills when you do the corresponding work?

Knowledge of chemical engineering is necessary, because the engineers should establish production plans, operate processes for the smooth production of products according to the plans, and solve problems. Senior Associate KyungJae Yoon

Pohang Plant Mechanical Section

  1. 1. Please introduce the work of electrical engineers and describe your responsibilities in detail.

The maintenance teams electrical engineers usually work on operate plants with two items. One is ordinary investment (new) and the other is maintenance (existing facilities).
Ordinary investment refers to developing and introducing new plant projects and new facility systems. Currently, the Pohang plant is working on a carbon black process carcass line U-2.4 separation project that is in its early stages. For this project, the job of electrical engineers starts with an estimation of material quantity. The production division usually sets the basic framework for projects and sends it to the maintenance team. The estimation of material quantity is divided into purchases of measuring instruments and valves, instrumental and electrical construction, purchases of electrical and DCS panels, and other grounding and lighting construction. First, we examine the instrument schedule to select measuring instruments and valves and choose the type of measuring instrument and materials that are suitable for each process and location.
In this process, price and instrument performance can vary greatly. So, it’s important to select the most suitable measuring instrument. Also, electrical panels and cables need to be designed according to the list of power machinery. This should be accompanied by DCS (PLC) work for automatic operation, and the design of other grounding and lighting construction is executed.

Along with the above work, we do estimations of material quantity, and if the project is executed, we purchase the materials with purchase applications, selection of measuring instruments, and technical examinations. After the goods are inspected if needed, the instruments are installed and pilot operation is executed.

Maintenance is repair work including preventive inspection and diagnosis for the operation of existing plants without problems. It is important to quickly normalize plants when accidents occur and set measures to prevent recurrence.

  2. 2. What do you think are the most necessary job skills when you do the corresponding work?

Maintenance work mainly needs knowledge and technology. I think an electrical engineer license is very helpful. As for instrumentation, universities usually do not have it in their curriculum. So, I think OJT education or training after joining the company is needed. Also, when electrical engineering is divided into new projects and maintenance of existing facilities, it is important to have problem-solving abilities and understanding and competence in judgment about how to approach and solve problems when accidents occur.

  3. 3. What do you expect 10 years from now?

Ten years from now, I think I will be working as an engineer who builds and manages plants after accumulating knowledge about generators and electrical power systems in the power division after being in the instrumentation division. People say electrical engineers usually talk with blueprints. I hope to become an engineer who always works with blueprints close beside him without neglecting to learn in the field as well as the office.

  4. 4. Do you have any words for those who dream of a career as an electrical engineer?

Many students want to work in Seoul or metropolitan cities. However, electricity is invisible, and working in the office has limitations. Seeing and learning in the field is helpful for their capabilities and career. I want to advise people that they should experience a lot in plants and build a career when they are new employees.

Senior Associate MinSeok Kong

Pohang Plant Engineering Section

  1. 1. Please introduce the work of mechanical engineers and describe your responsibilities in detail.

The main work of mechanical engineers in our company are project investment, new facility investment, and facility maintenance, and all these are directly and indirectly associated with productivity, although engineers do not directly participate in production. As the company’s profit is closely related to the productivity of plants, mechanical engineers should predict and prevent facility trouble and immediately respond to unexpected situations and thereby maintain the optimal process state so as to avoid any disruption in production.

  2. 2. What do you think are the most necessary job skills when you do the corresponding work?

The most needed job skills for plant engineers are a sense of responsibility and creative thinking. Without a strong sense of responsibility by engineers for things such resolving problems and facility investment, stable plant operation cannot be expected. And I think creative thinking is a means of responding easily to the reality of the 21st century where changes are difficult to predict.

  3. 3. What do you expect 10 years from now?

Talents who have both theoretical knowledge and practical experience in the mechanical engineering field will fit as mechanical engineers. I would like to become a mechanical engineer who contributes high economic value to our company and creates wealth based on 10 years of ceaseless development and experience. I also want to become a senior who is helpful to the cultivation of juniors and a role model for them based on accumulated knowledge.

  4. 4. Do you have any words for those who dream of a career as a mechanical engineer?

Mechanical engineers are essential everywhere in our current society and will be indispensable in the future, too. If you make ceaseless efforts and have enthusiasm for the road you have selected, I believe you will achieve your dreams and will not regret it. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Senior Associate Suji Cho

Gunsan Plant Quality Analysis

  1. 1. Please introduce the work of quality engineers and describe your responsibilities in detail.

Quality engineers analyze, manage, and guarantee all the products of OCI. They analyze the quality of materials that are used to produce products, intermediate products generated in major processes, and final products, and monitor them, thereby providing valid information that helps find quality abnormalities. They establish management standards for monitoring of materials, processes, and product quality, and interpret and manage the data using statistical techniques. They decide the release of finished products by referring to the analysis results and issue test reports. They also carry out internal quality audits and manage related departments to acquire and maintain an ISO9001 quality management system.

Lastly, they respond to audits, complaints, and the requirements of customer companies that use OCI products. They make efforts to provide the best satisfaction and value to customer companies and build trust relationships with this. Regarding the work above, I take responsibility for the response related to audits of polysilicon products and quality analysis for major customer companies.

  2. 2. What do you think are the most necessary job skills when you do the corresponding work?

The most necessary job skill for working on the quality analysis team is background knowledge about chemicals and analytics. This is because we can think about the analysis methods that are suitable for the substances that we want to analyze only when we understand the chemical characteristics of substances and measurement principles of analysis equipment. And, as the other teams support the production team, chemical engineering knowledge to understand chemical processes well will be helpful for working on those teams.

  3. 3. What do you expect 10 years from now?

I think I will grow into a hands-on expert for the quality management of products from the Gunsan plant.

As a quality management expert, I will actively provide communication to satisfy customer needs and play an important role in increasing value and trust in products.

  4. 4. Do you have any words for those who dream of a career as a quality engineer?

I think anyone who has a lot of interest in chemistry can develop the ability to carry out the corresponding work. Explore with confidence. Depending on how much interest you have in this job, the opportunity to do the work you want will come to you.

Senior Associate EunChul Choi

Gwangyang Plant SH&E Team

  1. 1. Please introduce the work of safety engineers and describe your responsibilities in detail.

Safety engineer work is mainly divided into safety guide management and assessment / safety education and information delivery / examination of process safety / waste management / and review of laws.

Safety engineers perform safety management according to the characteristics of business sites with continuous management and assessment based on standardized guides. And they conduct regular internal audits and evaluate if the safety guides are being observed. In addition, they are responsible for regular safety education and monthly environment safety conferences for suppliers as well as executives and employees.

  2. 2. What do you think are the most necessary job skills when you do the corresponding work?

Safety engineers are in neutral position and examine laws and promote and assess set goals. The first thing that is necessary for this work is information deliverability. They should deliver new information and changed guides to many people due to the nature of the work. So, they need to be eloquent to communicate clearly and unobtrusively.

Also, they must decisively say "no" to what should be rejected. A dull response like “It's not too bad” can lead to compromises with safety.

  3. 3. What do you expect 10 years from now?

I just took my first step as a safety engineer. My dream is to show myself and my mindset as a safety expert to many people. Like everything, safety also changes. I want to become an expert in global safety trends. I will acquire various licenses to be recognized as an engineer who has even mastered health and chemical engineering. I hope to become an engineer who can see, speak about and promote safety based on extensive knowledge.

  4. 4. Do you have any words for those who dream of a career as a safety engineer?

The safety awareness level has been raised recently due to an interest in safety. But the prejudice that safety is an inconvenience has not completely disappeared yet. So, we always face a temptation called 'compromise'.

I want only people who feel uncomfortable about compromise to dream of becoming a safety engineer. Please become a greedy person to know safety well so that you can claim and talk about it undauntedly.

Manager OhSeok Park

Gunsan Plant SH&E Team

  1. 1. Please introduce the work of environment engineers and describe your responsibilities in detail.

Environment engineers promote green management to minimize the environmental influences that are inevitably generated from the operation of business sites.
They make best efforts to properly treat pollutants such as wastewater and other waste and also even try to minimize them from the discharge process. Also, they are responsible for licensing work and government affairs with the appropriate design of discharge facilities and prevention equipment and respond rapidly when environment-related laws are strengthened. As our society pays more and more attention to the management of chemical substances due to chemical accidents that have occurred frequently in recent times, they focus on preventive management of chemical substances to prevent accidents from occurring in facilities that handle chemicals. In addition, various kinds of environmental education are executed to improve awareness of the environment and cultivate knowledge.

  2. 2. What do you think are the most necessary job skills when you do the corresponding work?

Environment engineers need to have knowledge of the laws related to the environment and a sense of responsibility to make an appropriate production environment. Of course, an active understanding of other work as well as knowledge of environmental laws and good relationships is basic requirements.

  3. 3. What do you expect 10 years from now?

I want to be a talented environment engineer also needed by other plants, not just the Gunsan plant. I expect to experience other work such as safety and production work to lead the green management of our company by combining this with the environment.

  4. 4. Do you have any words for those who dream of a career as an environment engineer?

I can say that chemical plants are the best learning site, where you can see and operate the environment-related facilities (emissions facilities, prevention facilities, etc.) that you learned about in university in person. Also, there is an opportunity to operate an eco-friendly plant yourself. But it is not as easy as you thought during university life. You need an understanding of major subjects and a proactive attitude. If you gain confidence overcoming whatever situation and a spirit of enquiry to thoroughly look into things, you can become the talent you want to be.

Senior Researcher SungMook Oh

OCI Research Lab

  1. 1. Please introduce the work of R&D researchers and describe your responsibilities in detail.

The OCI Central Research Institute conducts research for development of next-generation products. It is mainly divided into two sections, one for research on new materials, higher-value products with existing materials, and systems related to sunlight and energy storage systems (ESS), and another that conducts research with the purpose of development of new chemical processes and related equipment and creation of profit with existing process improvement.

I am responsible for the development section. My aim is to make profit by effectively and efficiently improving the existing processes of OCI. It is like “squeezing out a dry towel,” in other words, the key point of the research is to find the part where there may be water and squeezing only that part instead of the whole towel. Furthermore, based on the know-how and experience I acquired from process improvement work, I want to develop new processes and evaluate these. I will work hard in order for the next-generation products of OCI to rapidly land smoothly and make a profit.

  2. 2. What do you think are the most necessary job skills when you do the corresponding work?

The most important skill for R&D is flexibility. Most researchers come to the research institute after graduate school. After joining the company, they are assigned to a department. If the department does not cover the major they did in graduate school, they are confused. Here, they need flexibility to accept new subjects. They should apply what they learned to the department or accept whole new subjects. This is a requirement that is always needed, not when you are a new employee, due to the nature of the research institute where projects are frequently changing.

Moreover, flexibility will be helpful for you to think about how you can apply the research you conducted to the actual field and make a profit, and not keep it in the laboratory.

  3. 3. What do you expect 10 years from now?

I want to be a project leader who starts new processes or improves existing processes by gathering many experiences and know-how about research on the development and improvement of the processes we do now. Also, if possible, I want to promote and sell the advanced technical solutions of OCI with external work such as being a process consultant instead of working within OCI.

  4. 4. Do you have any words for those who dream of a career as a researcher?

You can accumulate various experiences in the OCI Central Research Institute. At first, these experiences may be unfamiliar and difficult. But I believe that if you overcome them well, they can be your precious assets. I hope you apply your capability freely in the OCI Central Research Institute, where the future is more expected than the present.
