Senior Associate KyungJae Yoon

Pohang Plant Mechanical Section

  1. 1. Please describe your current job responsibilities as electrical engineers.

Electrical engineers usually are assigned to the maintenance team, and we mainly carry out two tasks to help operate our plants: One is ordinary investment for new projects and the other is maintenance of existing facilities. Ordinary investment refers to developing and introducing new plant projects and new facility systems. Currently, our Pohang plant is implementing the carcass line U-2.4 separation project, the initial stage of carbon black process. The project starts by estimating the quantity of feedstock. The production division usually sets the basic framework for projects and sends it to the maintenance team. Quantity estimation is mainly divided into purchasing instruments and valves, implementing instrumental and electrical construction, procuring electrical and DCS panels, and executing other grounding and lighting construction. First, we examine instrument schedule to select measuring instrument and valves, and choose the type and material of the measuring instrument suitable for each process and location. The price and level of performance of instruments can vary to a great extent, so it’s important to select the most suitable measuring instrument. Also, designing of electrical panels and cables according to the list of power machinery is needed. For automatic operation, DCS (PLC) work needs to be done. Then we start designing extra grounding and lighting construction.

We can project the quantity of feedstock through such process, and when we start implementing the project, we make purchases by submitting purchase requisition, selecting measuring instrument, and making technical review. Purchased goods are inspected if needed, then they are installed for pilot test.

Maintenance and repair include preventive inspection and diagnosis of existing plants to ensure they operate without issues. What’s important is to quickly normalize plants when accidents occur and set measures to prevent recurrence.

  2. 2. What do you think are the most necessary job skills when doing your work?

Maintenance requires knowledge and technical capacity. I believe that a certification of ‘Engineer Electricity’ is very helpful, and as for instrumentation, universities usually do not offer any programs in their curriculum. So, OJT or training after joining the company is needed. In addition, as we, electrical engineers, deal with maintenance of both new projects and existing facilities, it is vital to equip ourselves with abilities for problem-solving, and capacity for comprehending and making a quick decision about how to approach issues and solve problems when accidents occur.

  3. 3. How do you picture yourself in 10 years?

Ten years from now, I think I will be working as an engineer who builds and manages plants with the accumulated expertise on generators and electrical power systems in the power division following my career in the instrumentation division. People say that electrical engineers talk in blueprints. I hope to become an engineer who talks in blueprints keeping them close beside me, and who continues to learn on the field and in the office.

  4. 4. Do you have any words for those who pursue a career as an electrical engineer?

A great number of students are eager to work in the offices of Seoul or metropolitan cities. However, working in offices can limit your ability and your career. Seeing and learning on the field is more helpful for enhancing their capacities and careers. I want to advise people to earn experiences in plants and build careers while they are still new hires.

Senior Associate MinSeok Kong

Pohang Plant Engineering Section

  1. 1. Please describe your current job responsibilities as mechanical engineers.

What we mainly do as mechanical engineers here at OCI are both directly and indirectly linked to productivity without being directly involved in the manufacturing process: Project investment, new facilities investment, facilities maintenance and repair. As the company’s profit is closely related to the productivity of plants, mechanical engineers should predict and prevent troubles arising from the facilities, and immediately respond to unexpected situations. All of which are related to maintaining an optimal state of the processes to avoid any disruptions in the production process.

  2. 2. What do you think are the most necessary job skills when doing your job?

The most essential job skills for plant engineers are heavy sense of responsibility and creative thinking. Without a strong sense of responsibility when resolving problems and investing for facilities, we cannot guarantee stable plant operation. In addition, I believe creative thinking allows us to aptly respond to the rapidly changing reality in the 21st century where changes are difficult to predict.

  3. 3. How do you picture yourself in 10 years?

Those who have both theoretical knowledge and practical experience in the mechanical engineering field are suitable for the job of mechanical engineers. I hope to become a mechanical engineer of high economic value to OCI. I will continue to grow and gain experiences in the field. I also want to become a helpful senior member and a role model for the junior members of our company, cultivating their talents based on my experiences and expertise.

  4. 4. Do you have any words for those who pursue a career as a mechanical engineer?

Mechanical engineers are indispensable in our current world, and surely will be of important assets in the future as well. If you make your utmost efforts, and you are passionate about the path you have chosen, I believe that your dreams will come true, and you will not regret the path you have taken.

Senior Associate Suji Cho

Gunsan Plant Quality Analysis

  1. 1. Please describe your current job responsibilities as quality engineers.

Quality engineers analyze, manage, and guarantee all products of OCI. We analyze the quality of all materials including feedstock used to manufacture products, intermediate feedstock generated in the main process, and the final products. We then monitor them, thereby providing valid information that helps to locate abnormalities. We also establish management standards to monitor feedstock, process and product quality, interpreting and managing the data using statistical techniques. Then, the shipment of products is determined by referencing the results of our analyses, after which the product inspection certificates are issued. We also carry out internal quality audits and manage related departments to acquire and maintain the requirements of the Quality Management System, ISO9001 in particular.

Lastly, we respond to the audits, complaints, and requests of our client companies taking advantage of the OCI products. We make our utmost efforts to provide satisfaction and value to our customers and build on our trust with them. Regarding this, I am in charge of responding to the audits of poly-silicon products and providing quality analysis for our main client companies.

  2. 2. What do you think are the most necessary job skills when doing your job?

The most important job skill when working in the quality analysis team is the background knowledge about chemicals and analytics. With the knowledge, we can come up with analysis methods that are suitable for target substances without much difficulty because we already understand chemical characteristics of the substances and how the equipment for analysis functions. Besides, as we are a supporting team of the production team, being knowledgeable in chemical engineering having a grasp of the chemical processes will also be helpful.

  3. 3. How do you picture yourself in 10 years?

I believe I will have become a hands-on expert on quality products management at our Gunsan plant.

As a quality management expert, I will actively communicate with our customers and clients to satisfy their needs and play a vital role in increasing value and trust of our products.

  4. 4. Do you have any words for those who pursue a career as a quality engineer?

Anyone who is deeply interested in chemistry can develop the ability to work as a quality engineer. Have confidence and explore your abilities. If the level of interest you have for this job is high enough, chances for you to become a quality engineer will come your way.

Senior Associate EunChul Choi

Gwangyang Plant SH&E Team

  1. 1. Please describe your current job responsibilities as safety engineers.

Safety engineer’s roles can be broken down to five parts: safety guide management and assessment? safety training and safety information delivery ? examination of process safety? waste management ?finally the review of relevant laws and regulations

Based on the standardized guidelines, we are conducting regular evaluations to thoroughly manage our work sites according to their distinctiveness. And these assessments are followed up by our internal audits for the confirmation of their implementation. We also hold regular safety training and monthly environmental safety meetings for our executives and employees as well as our partner companies.

  2. 2. What do you think are the most necessary job skills when doing your job?

Safety engineers need to keep a neutral position as our job is to review relevant laws and regulations, push forward objectives based on the review, and finally assess the performance of the set objectives. Hence, the most valuable skill in doing our job is to communicate well with others. Our job particularly requires an ability to convey new information and changed guidelines to others. So you should be able to deliver such messages in a clear and polite manner.

Also, you must be firm in what you do and be able to say no to what is not right. ‘I can compromise a bit’ sort of mindset might lead to a compromise with safety.

  3. 3. How do you picture yourself in 10 years?

I just took my first step as a safety engineer. My dream is to present myself to others as a safety expert, and show them how mature I am as an expert. I particularly want to become a global trends expert regarding safety because as everything evolves, safety evolves as well. To this end, I will acquire various certificates so that I can be recognized as an engineer proficient in safety as well as health and chemicals. Based on extended and multifarious knowledge, I hope to become an engineer who can see, discuss and promote safety.

  4. 4. Do you have any words for those who pursue a career as a safety engineer?

It is true that the level of safety awareness rose as of recent as safety became a buzzword in our society. But it is also true that some biased opinions about safe being inconvenient still hang around. That is why we more than often bump into the temptation called compromise.

I hope that people who feel uncomfortable with compromising wish to become safety engineers. And I also hope that those who dream of becoming a safety engineer have a craving for knowledge regarding safety and eventually become an expert on the subject.

Senior Researcher SungMook Oh

OCI Research Lab

  1. 1. Please describe your current job responsibilities as R&D researchers.

The OCI Central Research Center conducts research to develop next-generation products. The work is divided into two parts. The research part of the R&D focuses on developing products with new materials and high value-added products with existing materials. Whereas the development part is more toward research developing new chemical processes, related equipment and improved processes to increase profitability.

I am in charge of the development and I aim to make profit by improving the existing processes to a more effective and efficient direction. It is like “squeezing out a dry towel.” In other words, the key point of the research is to zoom in on the part where there may be water and squeezing only that part instead of the whole towel. Furthermore, based on the know-hows and experiences I acquired from the process improvement, I want to develop new processes and assess them so that OCI’s future promising products can smoothly blend in to make profit.

  2. 2. What do you think are the most necessary job skills when doing your job?

The most important skill for R&D is flexibility. Most researchers join the research center after graduate school. After being assigned to a laboratory, they often get puzzled because what they majored in at the school does not correspond to the job they are given. That is when flexibility comes into play to take in new subjects and apply what they had previously learned to the new tasks. Due to the nature of the tasks given at the center where projects frequently change, flexibility is a trait needed for everyone who works here.

Furthermore, flexibility is necessary when you think about applying our research practically to yield profit and not just keeping it to ourselves in the laboratory.

  3. 3. How do you picture yourself in 10 years?

I want to be a project leader who begins and ends every process management, pioneering the management process of new projects and improving the management process of existing ones, all of which can be realized by acquiring experiences and know-hows related to the study on the development and improvement of the processes which are our current pursuit. And if possible, I want to market and sell OCI’s advanced solutions as a process management consultant, broadening my scope of works through a variety of business activities.

  4. 4. Do you have any words for those who pursue a career as a researcher?

You get to gain a variety of experiences at the OCI R&D Center. At first, the tasks may be unfamiliar and difficult. But I’m sure if you overcome them, they can be your precious assets. I hope you unleash your potential at OCI R&D Center, where the future is brighter than the present.
